BEYOND Podcast | Season 2, Episode #2 — Why Strategies Miss the Mark
Episode Summary
If you've ever found the perfect strategy, executed it well, and still felt like something was quietly dismantling your results from the inside — this episode is for you. Katie Lynn Rojano breaks down the real reason brilliant women stay stuck: implementing a strategy before doing the identity work to match it. Through her own experience with 75 Hard and a client story about a woman who couldn't bring herself to hit send on a launch email, Katie reveals how your subconscious mind and nervous system are always running the show — and what to do about it.
In This Episode:
Why strategy without identity work creates temporary results at best
The neuroscience behind why you self-sabotage (hint: it's not a motivation problem)
What your Reticular Activating System (RAS) has to do with the opportunities you can and can't see
Katie's personal experience with 75 Hard — and what it revealed about her adapted identity
Jennifer's story: why a woman with every reason to raise her prices couldn't press send
The one question to ask when a strategy isn't working the way you want it to
An introduction to Phase One of the RED Method and why we always start with identity first
Your Homework This Week
Think of one strategy you've been executing — or thinking of executing — that hasn't been creating the results you want. Then ask yourself:
"What would I need to let go of in order for this strategy to create the results I want to experience?"
Complete this sentence and write it down:
"The woman who makes this strategy work fully is someone who…"
Let it feel slightly uncomfortable. That discomfort means you're on the edge of something new.

katie: Welcome back to Beyond, a transformational space dedicated to you living a life beyond the mind, beyond the stories, and beyond the limits. If this is your first time here, I am Katie Lynn Rahano, former psychotherapist, coach, and identity expert. And today we are talking about the one thing I see derail brilliant women more consistently than anything else. It's hoping a strategy will create incredible results without expanding their identity. To match the capacity of the results they dream of creating. Tell me if this is familiar. You have a moment of clear inspiration. You act on the inspiration, you pull out your journal, you write down your vision, and you set the goals. Then you build a strategy. Or maybe you even hire an expert to design the system for you. You do your due diligence before saying yes to the strategy. You see the testimonials, and maybe you even talk to the people who have used the system and experienced incredible results. So then you go for it. After thoughtful research and consideration of your goals, you feel ready. You're like, I know this is it. This is the strategy that will absolutely get me to my goals, and you dive in. You begin implementing the strategy, and you're consistent. And then day seven comes, and somewhere between the inspiration and the execution, something inside you starts to dismantle it. You go from feeling so much clarity and so much energy to procrastinating or avoiding the thing that matters the most in the strategy. Your life starts to get busy in ways that you didn't expect, and you start to play it safer. Than you planned, or maybe even resist the strategy altogether. And somewhere along the way, you might start to think it's a strategy problem, right? Thinking maybe it's not working. This strategy is not working for me. And gosh, I know this so well. Way back in 2019, I knew I desired to change my physical physique. Okay. I was the heaviest I had ever been. And I had just met my now husband. I knew if we were going to get married and possibly have a family, that I really wanted to do everything I could to be in the best physical shape that I could be in. So I found a strategy that you've probably heard of called 75 Hard. Now, I will be the first to tell you that 75 Hard, when done as written, is a very effective strategy for making drastic physical changes. To someone's physical health. My husband and I both reviewed the strategy and we decided, yes, it's time. We'll we'll do it together, right? We felt so ready and we began to execute. And execute we did. I did one round and definitely experienced physical changes. But honestly, I didn't feel different inside. It was really confusing. So I did another round. And again, I executed properly, I noticed the physical changes, but even still, I didn't feel different inside. And this is when I really started to get curious because the strategy did work to a certain degree. And I executed the strategy as written. But the real results that I desired to create were not external. They were internal. And with the strategy of 75 Heart, I was only changing. My external actions and circumstances, I wasn't actually addressing any of the deeper internal things that were blocking me from becoming the woman I know I wanted to become. I thought if I could get into the best physical shape of my life, then I would feel confident, energized, and unstoppable. And I learned through my own experience that that just wasn't the case. The strategy felt more like a pretty band-aid than. A real solution. It also reminds me of Jennifer. So Jennifer came to me when she decided she wanted to raise her prices and, in air quotes, charge her worth. Have you ever said that to yourself? I'm ready to charge my worth. She had done the math, she created the offer, she had evidence that her work was effective, and she had the expertise to deliver, if not even over-deliver, the results at the new price point. Logically, It made complete sense and Jennifer felt like this was the right time. Jennifer set everything up. And when the day came to send the launch email to her email list, she messaged me. She told me she had rewritten the launch email 10 times. She had softened the language. She had added three unnecessary disclaimers, and she even considered offering an early bird discount that she had not initially planned for. I listened as Jennifer shared, and I heard her say, Katie, I was so confident that I was ready for this next level, and I can't bring myself to press send. What is happening? I resonated with Jennifer's confusion because her strategy was sound. But what we really got to see was that her adapted identity, the one she created to protect herself from rejection, judgment, loss, and visibility, was running the show. And what we couldn't see yet was that the same adapted identity was also keeping her from her greater service, from more abundance and freedom that only embodied worthiness can create. The version of Jennifer sitting at the computer that morning. questioning herself while running her fingers across that keyboard was not the same version of Jennifer, who knew it was time to own her worth. That morning, as Jennifer and I spoke, we realized that Jennifer had spent decades believing that her value was conditional and it was based on her ability to make other people comfortable and how well she could meet their needs. She needed to prove her worth, or at least that's what she believed. And she also believed that she needed to keep other people happy. Now, this is tricky because the strategy Jennifer was committed to implementing required that Jennifer be fully seen, that she take up more space, and that she have more exposure to new people. Proving herself or pretzeling herself to make other people happy was not a part of the strategy. In fact, it was the very thing. That was stifling the strategy. And this is the crux of what we're talking about today. No strategy gets implemented without our identity directly influencing the process. And if we implement a strategy before we have taken the time to refine our identity, then the strategy will work temporarily at best and fall by the wayside at worst. In the world of beyond, our identity is what our subconscious mind and nervous system. Holds to be true about who we are, what we're capable of, and what we deserve, and what we regard as safe. And here's the critical thing: your nervous system, just like your subconscious mind, cannot distinguish between the long-standing conditioned truths and reality. To your brain and your nervous system, they are the same thing. This is why a woman like Jennifer, who intellectually knows she is worth and capable of more. Who can make perfectly rational cases for why she should charge double, take up more space, set the boundary, ask for what she actually needs, can also have a very difficult time initiating and sustaining these behavior changes over time because her subconscious mind and nervous system operate according to a different identity. And the subconscious mind will always have the final say when it comes to identity. Now, we all have a subconscious mind, a brain, And a nervous system. No one gets a pass on navigating identity work. If they desire to create a different experience of life or different outcomes, then they will need to embrace identity work for longstanding results. I know there are so many different perspectives out there as to how to quote unquote manifest a new reality. And I return to the quote I shared in episode one, which is everywhere you go, there you are. The identity you operate with and the identity that I operate with is the common denominator. And if we know this, what do we do? What does a woman like me or Jennifer do when we realize our adapted identity is still calling the shots and every strategy seems to fall short? Do we change our thoughts? Do we listen to subliminal meditations? Do we do mindset work? Do we do somatic therapy, or is there a book to read that has the magic solution? And what I'll tell you is all of those modalities are great in their own right and even important depending on the season of life you're in. I will be the first to tell you I've done them all, and even more. You name it, I've I've done it. The thing I keep returning to is this identity work. Everything we perceive. Feel and experience is only ever always filtered by what we know to be true about ourselves. Here's how this plays out in concrete terms. Think about the last time you created a goal, a real one, one that felt uncomfortable and stretchy. And then you watched yourself quietly question it. Maybe you thought, is it too big? Am I ready? What will they think? Is it even possible? These are all valid questions. And I have another question. What might be inspiring these questions? Because these questions are produced by an uncertain brain. When these types of questions arise, it's a signal that the brain and your nervous system are in unfamiliar territory or self-preservation mode. The version of you required to create this next chapter of your life. Is perceived as a threat to the identity you have walked with up until now. The mind and the body are running its survival program, which is stay familiar, stay safe, stay the woman that we already know how to be. The adapted identity is not the enemy. It was designed to protect you, but it's running software designed for results you have already created and a previous version of your life. And every goal you set that creates a different outcome or requires a newer version of you, a more visible, more sovereign, more liberated version of you is gonna feel like it's being threatened until you have done the work to install a new one. This is why strategy alone will never create real transformation. Strategy is the what and the how. Identity is the who. And when the who is not aligned, With the what and the how, the who will win every single time. I'd love to give you some neuroscience to support this. So your brain has a function called the reticular activating system, the RAS, okay? And its job is to filter reality based on who you know yourself to be. Now the filtering doesn't come from your eyeballs, even though it was seem like it would. The filtering comes from your subconscious mind. Because your subconscious mind is where your identity is held, right? So imagine I put on a pair of glasses that have green lenses. What will happen? Well, everything I look at through those glasses will have a green tint to it. Our identity is a metaphorical lens through which we engage with the world. When your identity is, I'm someone who struggles with visibility, your RAS or Your lens will find every piece of evidence that confirms the story of struggle and filter out all the evidence for ease. We become blind to the ways in which life can be easy and simple. We literally will not see the opportunities no matter how hard we try, not because they're not there, but because your identity is built on struggle. So we start at the root of it all. The identity. We change the lens or the RAS and we start to redesign first. You begin to see and hear and experience evidence of the new identity. The strategy doesn't change, the filter does. And changing the filter changes everything. This is the whole architecture of phase one of the red method and beyond. Here's what I want to make a note of. This is not about faking a new identity or performing confidence that you haven't earned. It's not about delusion. It is about truth. It's about getting clear and declaring the woman you are already in the process of becoming with specificity from your heart and with the kind of precision that inspires your nervous system to sit up and pay attention. Then and only then can we explore strategy. Take a moment and imagine the life you desire to live. The home you desire, the way your relationships feel, the financial resources, the activities you desire to be a part of. Once you've imagined it, here are the questions I want you to sit with. The woman who has this life, what does she know to be true about herself? What are the thoughts she thinks when she wakes up in the morning? When she sees her reflection in the mirror, what does she say to herself quietly? How does she feel when a stranger gives her a compliment she did not earn? How does she respond when a stranger gives her a compliment that she did not earn? How does she navigate her emotions? And how does she show up when challenges arise? Your answers to these questions will give you a solid start on creating the identity that has the capacity to really Create and receive the results you so deeply desire. The woman you just created as you answered these questions is the woman who can adapt a strategy and experience lasting results. And maybe you're like, Katie, what if I find myself in this moment trying to implement a strategy that hasn't been creating the results I desire? This is a great question. And one of the things I love most about the kind of women who find their way to beyond. These women are curious and they're ready to take action. They are not interested in wasting any more time being the adapted version of themselves. So here's the deal: think of a strategy you've been executing. Maybe it's a marketing strategy, maybe it's a dating strategy or a weight loss strategy that has just not been working the way you really want it to. Now ask: what would I need to let go of in order for this strategy? To create the results I want to experience. Notice I did not say, what do I need to do to make this strategy work? I'm gonna be honest with you. The gap between who you have been and who you need to become is not about doing. It's about letting go of the intangible things that are sustaining the old identity. Maybe you get to let go of self-doubt. Maybe you get to let go of negative self-talk. Maybe you get to let go of allowing your brain to talk you out of following through or following up. Maybe you get to let go of overthinking. Maybe you get to let go of prioritizing everybody else before you prioritize taking care of yourself. As I share this with you, I think about my journey with 75 Hard that I spoke about earlier in this episode. I was able to do all the things asked of me to complete 75 Hard. But what I actually hadn't let go of was the commitment my adapted identity had to struggle. I mean, it's kind of comical now that I think about it, because the name of the strategy is 75 hard. And the truth I had held about myself at that time was that if I wanted a result, then I had to work hard to create it. And Jennifer, Jennifer needed to let go of feeling responsible for the happiness of others. And she also needed to let go of proving her worth. When we are thorough in the identity work, the strategy creates a totally different result because the woman who is implementing the strategy is fundamentally different. This is what identity first looks like in practice, and it is available for you. Here is your takeaway from today: every strategy is governed by an identity. What identity is running your strategies? In season two of Beyond, we are diving deep into identity to collapse time between where you are and where you want to be. Just because you've lived this way for decades does not mean you need to spend the next decade working on changing it. And that is great news. And that is the reason that I love identity work so much, because time is the one resource that we cannot get back. You cannot buy more time, right? So I want to make sure that we are working at the root and we are really addressing the thing that collapses time for us. So remember to start with the declaration because the fastest way to get from point A to point B is to actually know where point B is. We declare who we are becoming, we excavate what is getting in the way, and then we take the kind of action that makes the new identity real right now. Your homework this week is to take one strategy you've been executing, or maybe you have been thinking of executing, and reflect on what you could let go of that would make that strategy even more effective. Write it down so your brain can see it. This could sound like: the woman who makes this strategy work fully is someone who, and then finish that sentence at least five times, get specific and allow it to feel slightly uncomfortable. Next week, Is the power of a specific vision. We are going to talk about why vague aspirations are actually a form of self-protection and how to get specific enough that your nervous system starts to regard the future as safe and possible. I'm Katie Lynn Rahano. This is Beyond. And if you are ready to take action now, the Mental Mastery Framework is a daily 10-minute practice that collapses time and makes identity work sustainable.
